The telecommunications industry was liberalized in 2001, with the arrival of EU directives. An independent regulatory authority, the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority, was established. Its functions include licensing of operators and the general monitoring and control ofelectronic communications issues. Currently, there are three licensed internet service providers (ISPs) in Gibraltar.
The principal ISP in Gibraltar is Gibtelecom, which recently became a wholly owned government company following the Government’s acquisition of its 50% stake held by Telekom Slovenije. Gibtelecom provides the main local fixed line and mobile phone services, as well as internet solutions, including delivery of IP bandwidth and ADSL broadband.
